Democrat Joe Cunningham floats nine potential runnings mates in SC governor's race
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Joe Cunningham released a short list of nine potential running mates heavily comprised of women and people of color ahead of a November showdown with incumbent Republican Gov. Henry McMaster.
In a news release July 18, Cunningham identified nine prospective names for lieutenant governor from across the state, ranging from city council members and former Statehouse candidates to sitting members of the General Assembly.
Of the list, seven are women and four are people are color.
Geographically, the list includes three current Lowcountry residents, five from the Midlands and just one candidate from the Upstate, though several on the list originally hail from the region.
“The person I choose for lieutenant governor will be ready to lead on day one,” Cunningham said in a statement. “Our ticket will represent the future of South Carolina and the amazing potential of our state. I am committed to selecting a qualified, visionary leader to join our team and help usher in a new generation of leadership for South Carolina.”
