COMMENTARY: FIXING SC EDUCATION SYSTEM STARTS WITH ENDING TEACHER SHORTAGE CRISIS

South Carolina continues to miss the mark on providing a first-class education to our students, and its school system consistently ranks among the worst in the nation. This isn’t because of our talent or our people — we have some of the country’s best educators and brightest students. These failures in our education system are a direct result of our state government’s refusal to prioritize education.


Years of empty promises and Band-Aid solutions have resulted in the worst teacher shortage South Carolina has ever seen. Veteran teachers are seeking employment in different fields, while new teachers leave South Carolina for teaching jobs in neighboring states. The remaining teachers have to do even more work with even fewer resources, resulting in hundreds of unfilled positions and unprecedented burnout. {...}
